Scout Permits

1. Technical Competence

Assessed practically by a Nights Away or Activity Permit Assessor, you will need to demonstrate the following core skills to run a safe paddling session: 

  • Equipment Knowledge: Produce appropriate equipment lists, check gear for safety, and demonstrate correct usage and storage.
  • Safety and Rescue: Show proficiency in deep water rescues, towing, capsize drills, and handling emergencies.
  • Navigation & Planning: Plan a route, understand water classifications (A, B1, B2, B3), and account for weather and environmental hazards.
  • Leadership & Group Management: Keep the group together, communicate clearly, and manage varying abilities. Scouts +4

2. Knowledge of Scout Association Rules

During a scenario-based discussion, your assessor or Lead Volunteer will verify that you know: Scouts

  • Activity permit rules and Leader-to-Participant ratios.
  • Emergency procedures and incident reporting protocols.
  • How to manage and log adventurous activity experience within the Scouts Member Portal.

3. Safety, Safeguarding, and Medical

Completed by your Lead Volunteer or Permit Approver, this administrative check ensures you meet safety requirements: 

Scouts

  • Hold a valid criminal record check (e.g., DBS).
  • Have completed mandatory Safety and Safeguarding online training.
  • Have logged any relevant medical or health factors that may affect your assessment or permit restrictions. 

4. Personal Suitability

Your Group or District Lead Volunteer evaluates your character, maturity, and attitude to ensure you are fit to lead young people on the water. 

Next Steps to Apply

  1. Prepare Your Evidence: Gather your relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications, a log of your paddling experience, and any certifications (e.g., PaddleUK/British Canoeing awards).
  2. Review Resources: Consult the ** KSCC guide **  page for specific Local Rules, hazard logs, and the official Permit Guide.
  3. Submit Your Application: Apply for the specific craft (e.g., Canoe, Kayak, SUP) and level (Personal, Leadership, or Supervisory) directly through the Scouts Member Portaland select a local assessor to review your evidence.
