Foundation Safety and Rescue Training


This is a one day training course and whilst a very useful training day in itself is also a pre-requiset for BCU and UKCC Coaching Awards.

Course Aims:
The course aims to provide the student with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely in a sheltered water environment and to be able to deal with common emergencies.These skills will then form the basis of all safety and rescue training throughout the BCU Scheme.

The course has two purposes:
1.To provide the paddler with the necessary skills which will enable them to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

2. To provide the paddler with the appropriate rescue skills which can be used to help themselves and/or others in difficulty.

Theory – Safety features of a canoe/kayak. Hazards of water.Weather.Clothing.Emergency services/ getting the right. Help. Safety of rescuer. Manuel handling

Lifesaving –- Coaching a swimmer in difficulty. Reach rescue rigid /non-rigid. Throwing a buoyant object. Wading to get nearer

Bank Based and Boat based Rescue skills – Using a throw line. Deep water rescues rescue.H-rescue.T-rescue.Curl rescue. Eskimo rescue –bow presentation. Unconscious rescue. Stirrup rescue. All in rescueMore rescues and Unknown incidents
